This year’s Choral Creation Lab Showcase is a celebration of the ways choral music can capture the human experience like no other art form. The combined voices of the Amadeus Choir and University of Toronto Chamber Choir bring a wall of sound to powerful new compositions by the leading Canadian creators participating in this year’s CCL program: Sami Anguaya is inspired by his South American roots in his driving, rhythmic (and catchy!) compositions. Rebecca Gray, a trained operatic soprano and composer, uses the full potential of the human voice to explore subjects of gender, identity, and origin. Poet Rohini Bannerjee digs deep in her exploration of grief, the immigrant experience, and overcoming childhood expectations. Qurat Dar cleverly crafts text that challenges gender norms and the way we look at the world. Christina Wells captures the essence of family love and the ethereal nature of childhood memory. *** The concert will also feature the work of our esteemed artist mentors: Composers Iman Habibi, Matthew Emery, and Marie-Claire Saindon, and poets Luke Hathaway, Coco Colleen Collins, and Gavin Barrett. Works by alumni Edward Enman (CCL 2021), Matthew Gwathmey (CCL 2021), and Emily Hiemstra (CCL 2023) will tie the program together with themes of environment and a call to action for resource protection. Don’t miss this virtuosic display of relevant, poignant, and straight-from-the-heart choral music. |
